Not worth the hassle September 6, 2010 C. Bassett (Boston MA) I bought this machine in April of '10. In July '10 it stopped working. I spent 4 weeks calling Asus, getting bad advice (example - Rep #1 "Just flash your bios, that will solve everything" Rep #2 "Whatever you do, DO NOT flash your bios, it voids the warranty") and taking it to Best Buy (their warranty repair shop) only to have Best Buy tell me they couldn't fix it and did not do warranty work for Asus. On my last phone call with Asus I heard "Ma'am, it's just not possible for a computer to not have a disc drive. Keep looking" even though this model CLEARLY does not have one. I finally had to send the laptop back to them (2 weeks and counting) and buy another more reliable laptop elsewhere.
It is super light and when working, super fast. But if you really need it, buy something else.
Aesthetically pleasing, surprisingly powerful little laptop September 5, 2010 Joe Passi (Chicago) I usually do not write reviews, but was behooved to do so after being offered a chance to win $1,000 after submitting a review; additionally, I'm quite impressed with this laptop and feel that ASUS deserves some props.
I've had the ASUS UL30VT-A1 Silver laptop for over a week now and feel that I can fairly accurately describe some of its main features. I'll refrain from getting too specific because there are others who have already done so (BTW: Thank you to all the conscientiousness reviewers! Along with some editor's reviews, you informed my decision to purchase this laptop.). I was originally going to get a netbook, but decided not to after using some myself and reading myriad reviews attesting to their limitedness. I decided on this laptop because it met my qualifications for portability, speed, and versatility.
First, the aesthetics/physical features: I have the silver version (more powerful version than the black) and absolutely love the streamlined look. It has a bit of an Apple-esque exterior, as well as similar chiclet style keyboard, but is decidedly different in appearance, not to mention way cheaper than a similar Apple product. Contrary to others criticisms, I have not found the fingerprints on the top of the laptop to be all that bad. They are certainly present, but not very conspicuous. The laptop feels sturdy and is refreshingly light. The screen is at the threshold of being too small (at least for me), but is just large enough to prevent one from having to squint too much.
One of the main reasons I purchased this particular laptop is for reading. I'm in a PhD program and get 150-250 pages of text to read a week, as well as ancillary reading I complete on my own, and was tired of having humongous stacks of peer-reviewed journal articles laying all over my apartment. Since most professors now offer the option of a digital copy, I slowly started to read/edit texts on my Compaq laptop. The problem was that it was too heavy to haul around in my messenger bag all of the time and the durability was questionable. This ultralight laptop has a nice screen (kind of glossy, but I got used to it real quick) and, with Acrobat Professional, reading and annotating pdf files has become effortless--as well as beneficial to the many trees I've saved.
A couple more comments on the physical features: The chiclet keyboard looks awesome and is really comfortable to type on; the touchpad (Elan Smart-Pad) is also integrated nicely into the silver aesthetic. It blends almost seamlessly into this attractive laptop. My only complaint about the touchpad is that it can be a bit glitchy and too sensitive sometimes (even with the personalization settings via the keyboard control panel). This is more of a software complaint than a visual one. I do, however, like the two-finger scroll and three-finger tap analogous to a right click. .
As far as software, my main gripe is with all of the bloatware, but that's a given with any laptop you buy from a store or third-party website. I love Windows 7 (have been using it for almost 8 months now) and this product certainly does the 64 bit version some justice. Now you have to remember that this is an ultralight laptop and therefore not as heavy on the internal features. It's unfair to compare this to a 15" laptop that weighs 6 pounds but has 8 gigs of ram and a terabyte of hard drive space. Asus did a great job of giving this puppy some power without the weight. The battery life is also noteworthy. I don't see the 12.5 hours (perhaps on the most frugal power settings you'll get 11 or so), but have consistently gotten around 6 or 7 with little in the way of battery management. On Turbo Mode, a cool little overclocking feature, you'll get quite a bit less. I turned it off a few days ago and have definitely noticed a difference, but it's still relatively fast.
What else? Yes, the camera is cool, but does not work very well in a room that's not well lit. The speakers? Surprisingly good! They're located just underneath the front of the laptop and get loud enough to make them useful for the user. There are 3 USB ports and a media card reader, which was a nice touch. The computer has a power button on the left that loads Express Gate, a quick-start program for web browsing, chatting, etc. Given the efficiency of this laptop in its normal state, I find this feature a bit superfluous; but it's still an accoutrement that adds to the allure of this stellar laptop. The HDMI port is awesome, and it also looks great on my 40" LCD, but both times I've used the port it required a restart in order to recognize that something was plugged into it. That, coupled with my belief that 5 stars should be reserved for the superlative of superlatives, led to a 4 star rating (I'd give 4.5 if I could). Movies play well on it, as do all of the basic programs in most peoples arsenal (e.g., Office, Photoshop, Windows Movie Maker). I definitely recommend this laptop.
Just awesome!!! September 2, 2010 Jeffrey Coble Battery life is great, quiet, stays cool, easy and innovative mousepad, good graphics. I've had the laptop for a about 1 month, and I cant find any problems with it. I love it, am very happy with it, and would highly recommend it to others.
Love it September 1, 2010 Michael S. Labrow (Fullerton, CA USA) I've been in the market for a portable computer I could get work done on. I'm a web developer, and I need a device that supports OpenCL, which somewhat limited my selection to computers with discrete graphics. I thought about stepping up to a computer with a 2010 Core processor (Core i3, or i5), but the were always out of my price range when paired with a decent graphics card, or had sub standard battery performance.
Pros:
So I ended up with this computer. So far after a week, I love it. It works, the keyboard is comfortable, the touch pad required some getting used to but I adapted to it quickly. The battery life has been incredible even on turbo with the graphics card on it will make it though most of a day of work without charging. With the card off, and with turbo disabled it lasts for the bus ride into work, a full day of work, and the ride home, which is what I wanted and needed since I consider that time on the bus as potentially useful, and so far it has been. If nothing else I get to go over scripts and read books while I ride, sometimes I put in actual work too.
Cons:
There is a screen flicker. This is generally when the graphics card is switching. You can control this by setting the Control Panel up correctly. If you don't know what's going on, when you unplug it the screen will dim, and after a few minutes the screen will go black then come back on. This is the computer switching off the Nvidia 210 to the intel chipset's 4500HD which is far less powerful, but relatively power efficient, which happens after 15 minutes as configured out of the box in the OS. It also tends to happen when waking up from sleep.
My only other real complaint has to do with the turbo mode which requires you to restart the computer. On days where I know that I won't be in front of a plug for awhile I turn it off before I head out the door. Otherwise I just leave it on. I've managed to get 7 hours with turbo on, and the battery wasn't out of joice, so it's not much of a problem...
Other than that it's the nicest laptop in the house by quite a large margin. Most of our other devices are at least 5 years old, heavy, don't do what I need, and last maybe an hour off the plug, so this computer has been a breath of fresh air.
The speakers are surprisingly loud for the size, they positively beat up my wife's HP laptop, even if they don't have impressive bass.
The screen is glossy, but I can still read it even in direct sunlight if I crank up the brightness. Color is pretty darn good, and the verticle viewing angles are good considering it has a TN panel and all.
My other real complaint is that the inside of the computer (the deck, and bezel around the screen) show dust like no one's business. I'm almost wishing I'd shelled out the extra 20 bucks for the silver version of the laptop. As it is, I've learned to keep a microfibre cloth in my computer bag, but it does sometimes bug me.
Otherwise this has been one of the best purchasing decisions I've made in a while. The computer has the right mix of performance, portability, and battery life to meet all my needs.
Not as rated by the others August 31, 2010 firstasusbuyer 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought this laptop through Amazon from J&R based on the glowing evaluations. Delivery was fast. Price was okay. When I unpacked the laptop, I noticed immediately a clicking sound whenever I press the upper left monitor lid. That immediately was a let down. The built is cheap. I've had IBM, Toshiba, Vaio and Dell but never got something like this.
And then, just browsing the Internet, the battery lasted barely six hours. Nothing to what they said posted as 12 hours.
I returned the laptop myself to J&R. Nothing is written in the invoice that says I will be charged $25 restocking fee. This should have been written explicitly in the invoice so that I would not have opened the box. Anyway, that was almost $50 wasted money just to know ASUS is not that good.
Will never try anything Asus again.
